Lilacs are one of the oldest, hardiest and most versatile of garden and landscape shrubs. This is an undemanding shrub that performs best in full sun, with well drained alkaline or neutral soil. Considered a sentimental favorite by many gardeners.
There is broad range of lilacs, beyond the old fashioned varieties to select for your yard and garden. The french hybrids, have been bred from the old fashioned lilacs and are superior, in many cases, giving much more bloom. Not only is the bloom larger, double, and more fragrant, but usually there is a bloom on every shoot.
There are many hybrids that are faster growing, more disease resistant and make better shrubs than the old fashioned varieties. The Canadian hybrid lilacs are extremely disease resistant, being generally more compact and well suited for a perennial border.
The dwarf lilacs are also an excellent shrub to use in a foundation planting, or shrub border, such species as "Miss Kim", "Microphilla Superba", and "Palibin" are mildew proof and very compact. These dwarf lilacs maintain beautiful foliage throughout the summer and require very little if any maintenance.
A particularly rare and hard to find lilac is Josee. This is really a first class compact shrub that remains neat and grows only to 6 feet. It has clean dark green leaves, similar to Palibin and is based on a complex mix of 3 of the best dwarf lilacs. Flowering in May-June the very long, airy panicles of icy lavender pink, come from darker colored buds. Josee, like the other dwarf lilacs, is certain to become a more popular shrub.
The mildew problem found on many lilacs is easily controlled with anything from horticultural oil, insecticidal soap, to a wilt proof type product.
When planting a lilac try to envision this shrub 10 or 20 years from now, because some can get quite large, and are usually long lived. Lilacs need full sun and good drainage. Periodically put some wood ashes and egg shells around the base.
